Personally I think carbon looks crap on anything other than cars and motorcycles. Virtual carbon (especially like that) makes my eyes go weird after a while too... Might just be me? I was using Kross too but Vim suggested a spruce up of the default theme, so I provided and now prefer it! It's all preference. 
The text in the banner was designed to look less 3D and more like it was bedded in to the road, with the image, hence the shading matches the cars. It's an old as hell image anyway, give me a new one!
