Setups - Max speed vs acceleration
Posted by: joruss - 11-20-2015, 06:49 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Perhaps I'll be stating the obvious but perhaps someone does not realises this.

Anyway.

Why having greater top speed is not necessarily better? Let's have a look at the chart below:

Fig1. Distance vs Time

Fig2. Speed vs Time

Now some definitions:
"Normal gears" - setup with gears you'd use to maximise end-of-straight speed
"Shorter gears" - setup with gears allowing for better acceleration (like for drag racing) - ideal one with unlimited number of gears
"Shorter gears (top speed limit)" - same as above but with limited number of gears - top speed is capped

As you can see on the images sometimes it really pays of to sacrifice even 20% of top speed in trade for travelled distance time.

Admittedly there's a point when this is no longer advantageous and you're just sitting duck at the end of the straight :-)

And to back it with some real life testimony I've just (couple hours ago) improved my PB on BL2 by simply reducing tops speed for gears 4 and 5

I'd just really like to know if Jacques and everyone else in the general vicinity of Paris are okay? I've been hearing horrible things Sad

  Sainted vs. Alexis epic
Posted by: Sainted - 09-10-2015, 12:17 PM - Forum: Replays - All servers - No Replies

Here is another post that will probably devide opinions.

I know I am quite respected by some racers on the server, and I am also hated by another half. The latter folks mostly belong to those who are either crashers themselves, or are not very good at fighting for position - they feel that I overtake at 'unsafe' places.

Not a self-defence, because I don't need any, but just to showcase the kind of racing that I produce. In this instance Alexis is much quicker overall, but I manage to capitalize on a couple of his little errors to eke out a win. This battle is intense, side-by-side most of those places, which some people can't navigate alone.

This kind of racing is slightly deorientating to me, as having raced Alexis I tend to expect all the others being able to do the same. So, I fight them hard, only do discover that many people on the server can only overtake via slipstreaming on the back straight.
